August activities

August 16th, 2010

Plenty of exciting things have been happening in the last couple of weeks.
Friday the 8th of August saw a special guest instructor Ivo Dos Santos take the 6-7 PM class. Ivo is a highly regarded MMA fighter; he has won several Australian titles and featured in Sprawl magazine. Ivo impressed everyone who attended with some clever BJJ moves and also with his friendly persona.

The following Friday another treat was had with guest instructor Priscus Fogagnolo taking training. Hill Sports Academy was over the moon when the hardened MMA and UFC fighter agreed to take this session. Members who came to the session could appreciate why Priscus has a cult following throughout Australia. Priscus was impressive in all aspects and ran an exceptional session.

The academy was also visited by a number of the Australian Judo team who who expressed their admiration of the Hill Sports Academy set up. They had been training at the AIS in lead up to the Oceania Championships held here in Canberra on the weekend.

Muscle Strains

July 2nd, 2010

Canberra Judo at HSA
The following points come from an ASC /AIS information fact sheet about muscle injury. It provides basic information about what constitutes a muscle injury and immediate management. In the key points, there is also some advice to help improve healing. The next fact sheet will be about delayed onset muscle soreness and how this differs from muscle injury such as a strain.
Muscle injuries including strains and ruptures (non-contact) and contusions (contact) are common in sport accounting for approximately 30% of presentations to sports medicine practises.
• Strains
• Disruption occurs most common at the junction between the muscle fibres and the tendon.
• Can be a complete disruption.
• Look for any deformity & a severe functional impact.
• Localised pain.
• Weakness (damaged muscle fibres will not be able to produce the same force).
• The key management points
• Proper assessment by a doctor or physiotherapist is essential.
• No anti-inflammatory medication – these reduce the healing capacity. If you are taking anti-inflams for another reason & sustain a muscle injury, speak with your doctor about what is best for you.
• Rest from activity which will pull damaged muscle fibres apart & will therefore prolong your time off ( generally approx 2 days of relative rest but this is depending upon severity & pain which is why individual assessment is vital).
• Ice can help with pain.
• Immediate compression (use compression bandage).
• Elevation.
• NO HARM (heat, alcohol, running or exercise or massage in the first 72 hours)
• design a rehabilitation program to strengthen your injured muscle.
